Ongoing Exhibition

Assemblage - A project on migration in relation to China

The migration phenomenon is reflected in two aspects in China: urban and rural population movement; convection between foreign population and Chinese population. In Assemblage, Xia Yanguo invites five artists, Hao Jingban, Tao Hui, Ming Wong, Wang Chong and Enoch Cheng to think about these two aspects separately. Yet their works are related to the "new collective" phenomenon after immigration, that is, how immigrants are affected at various levels in their local life, how they also play the role of "influencers", and how their identity with neighbors has quietly changed. Their structural status and the relationship between new identity cognition and the local environment are important topics in this exhibition.

As part of the regional project “Migration Narratives in East and Southeast Asia” of the Goethe-Institut, the exhibition “Assemblage” will be first presented in de Art Center and the Goethe-Institut China in June 2019. In late June, Ming Wong and Enoch Cheng will bring their new works Hand In Hand and Cocktail, which are commissioned by exhibition “Assemblage”, to the new group exhibition “Migration Narratives” in the 4th Ulaanbaatar International Media Art Festival. In October 2019, part of works from “Assemblage” will be presented in group exhibition “Migration continuing” that is hosted by Goethe-Institut Hong Kong. All the works from “Assemblage” will be exhibited in Korea Kwangju Asia Culture Center in November.

On 12 June, we will invite all participating artists to discuss on the topic “How to perceive migration today”.
